Hypnotherapy and the subconscious mind

Freud theorised that the conscious mind is the mind that we are aware of, containing all the thoughts, feelings and memories that we can easily access at any given moment.  The subconscious mind contains thoughts, feeling, urges and memories that are outside our conscious awareness.

The subconscious mind is not as flexible as the conscious mind and it we don’t have control of it.  This is necessary due to the large amount of simultaneous tasks it is carrying out at any given time, such as breathing, digestion, cell growth, muscle growth etc.  Our conscious mind would not be able to handle the million plus simultaneous tasks carried out by our unconscious mind.

Our conscious mind processes situations rationally and finds solutions based upon a proper assessment.  It learns new skills and adapts to new ideas quickly and easily.

Our subconscious mind reacts to emotions.  If we imagine a threat, it will take control and come to the rescue.  It acts quickly and powerfully in an instinctive manner in order to ensure survival.

As hypnotherapists, we use trance to access the subconscious mind and embed positive suggestions to help our clients reach their goals. These suggestions are much more powerful in trance so that the desired change will be more readily achieved.
